Facts about the church and local area.
The church of St Teilo’s, Llantilio Pertholey, serves the community of Mardy and surrounding areas.
Built in the 12th century, the site has been of religious interest for much longer. In the 6th century, land was given to Teilo, Bishop of Llandaff (or one of his followers) for a Christian cell. Pertholey translates as ‘Defiled Entrance’, possibly a reference to early Christian martyrs.
Today the church is facing all the challenges of the 21st century, but is still a central part of the community for a large number of people. Recently, St Teilo’s has created a Riverside Walk, celebrating the wildlife and nature surrounding the church.
The tower contains 6 bells, recently refurbished, which are rung for the Sunday service and special occasions.
