Abergavenny is an ideal base for exploring the Brecon Beacons on two wheels, with challenging climbs rewarded by stunning scenery. For the short distance/family cyclists, there are many types of terrain in and around Abergavenny. A national cycle path (Route 42) goes from Abergavenny to Chepstow. You can find out more information about the route on the Sustrans website.

Cyclists are also encouraged to use the canal towpath, which runs for miles through some very scenic countryside – and it’s flat! Find out more on the Canals & Rivers Trust website.

Some of the major cycle races go through Abergavenny, and the local cycle group often organises races for locals and visitors to participate in. In recent years, the Abergavenny Cycling Festival has become an established event on the cycling calendar.

The legendary Tumble route takes cyclists up a climb of 6km of steady 10% gradient – but the views off the top of the Blorenge from Keepers pond are well worth the effort.

If you’re an off-road cyclist, then it’s worth the trip to Bike Park Wales at Merthyr, around 30 mins drive from Abergavenny. It is a purpose built bike park with trails designed for riders of varying abilities.

Unfortunately erosion has and continues to be a problem on the local mountains. The Skirrid, for example has many signs banning the use of mountain bikes. Please check your route carefully if you decide to go off-road, and as always be considerate of the environment and other users.
