Local events

There are a number of events held regularly in and around Abergavenny throughout the year, as well as productions by local theatre groups, musical concerts and other entertainments.

    To celebrate 200 years since the opening of the Monmouthshire & Brecon canal, a wide range of activities and events are planned on and along the canal. The celebrations begin on the 10th of February with over 70 churches along the canal ringing their bells as they did at the grand opening 200 years ago.

  • Abergavenny Carnival
    (To be confirmed, usually July)

    Carnival day is one of the highlights of the year in Abergavenny, featuring a parade of floats from local schools, businesses and other organisations which follows a route around the town and finishes in Bailey Park. The park hosts a large number of events and stalls, making this a great family day out.

    These magnificent animals used to be the closest thing to a tractor that a farm possessed. A fun-filled day out with plenty of other events happening throughout the day.   • The Fun-fair
    (end of May/early September)

    Twice a year the fair comes to Abergavenny and takes over the Fairfield car-park. A tradition dating back centuries.

  • The Festival of Abergavenny
    (Summer)

    During July and August, a programme of cultured events takes place, from Shakespeare in the grounds of the castle to open-air musical concerts in Linda Vista gardens.

    Possibly Abergavenny's biggest event, the Abergavenny Food Festival attracts visitors from all over the country. A programme of culinary events are spread out across a number of venues in the town, with demonstrations from top chefs, specialist exhibitors and various entertainments. Described as the 'Glastonbury of Food Festivals' (Carole Cadwalladr, Observer Food Monthly), this festival just gets better and better. Expect to try out all kinds of food and drink samples from local and unique suppliers, and definitely expect to be taking plenty home with you!
